August 22, 2012 C- 1996- 084 /Lorencito Canyon Mine JHB
timing for the shrub transplants. NECC has stated that they plan to replant the shrub enclosure during the Fall
2012.
SLIDES and DAMAGE - Rule 4.12:
Gully repairs conducted in July 2012 throughout the mine site held up well to the recent storm events.
However, the north slope of parcel N -1 continues to contribute sediment down slope. This material is staying
within the disturbance area. Although this erosion is not resulting in concentrated gullies, it is reducing the
effective soil on the slope and covering vegetation at the flatter northern portions of the slope. The Division
advises NECC to implement methods to retain the soil on the slope. The inspector and NECC representative
thought appropriately placed and anchored wattles may provide effective sediment control. Other solutions may
be effective as well.
Gully repairs west of the shrub exclosure in parcel C -1 exhibited considerable down- cutting and will need
additional repairs. Sediment from these repairs was washed into the flat area of parcel C -I and into the shrub
exclosure.
The gully repairs on the north side of parcel W -1 were showing some erosion as well, though they have not
reformed gullies. This slope needs additional help in slowing the water flow and concentration down. Selectively
placed wattles or other erosion control measures would be beneficial on this slope.
A new gully formed as a result of the recent storms. This gully is located on the west side of parcel W -5. Runoff
flowed around the existing hay bales and drained west to Pond 5. Down- cutting was restricted to the upper 20 or
so feet from the head of the drainage. This gully cut up to 3 to 4 feet deep in places. NECC needs to repair this
gully feature.
Sediment from this gully did not make it all the way to Pond 5 but was deposited in the drainage.
TOPSOIL — Rule 4.06 Removal 4.06.2, Substitute Materials 4.06.4(4); Storage and Protection 4.063;
Redistribution 4.06.4:
Results of fertility and soil parameter analyses of the pond sediment clean out material needs to be
submitted to the division.
DOCUMENTS RECEIVED NA
OTHER (SPECIFY)
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 2
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 1
Page 4 of 12
