Weather conditions may require eadier termination of the fall seeding season. Spring weather conditions • <br />severely limit the opportunities for seeding of the permanent mixes. The month of May will be the only <br />consistent period available for spring seeding. All spring seeding activities will be completed by June 1. Any <br />transplanting, interseeding, or reseeding of permanent rectamation would usually be accomplished <br />concurrent with the regular planting season. <br />Seeding will be accomplished by drill seeding, broadcast seeding, or hydroseeding. Drill seeding is the <br />preferred method and will be employed on the majority of redaimed areas. A rangeland type drill equipped <br />with two seed boxes will be used for all ddll seeding. <br />This type of drill is capable of handling the rough and trashy surface conditions common in retopsoiled areas <br />and can be operated on relatively steep terrain. This drill is also adapted to seeding complex range mixtures <br />because of the availability of two seed boxes; a legume box, and a large seed box with agitators. The seed <br />mixes will be split into large and small seed components with the small seed placed in the legume box and <br />the large seed placed in the remaining box. The drop tubes from the small seed box are arranged to <br />broadest the small seed on the ground with light soil coverage accomplished by the drill action and drag • <br />chains. Seed in the large box, requiring deeper seeding, will prop into a furrow created by the ceMOUr disks <br />and then will be covered by the drag chains. All drill seeding operations will be done on the contour unless <br />steep slopes restrict operations to up and down the slope for safety reasons. <br />Broadcast seeding will be carried out in areas where drill seeding operations would be restricted, inctuding <br />steep slopes that are to be temporariy redaimed. A roughened seedbed will be developed on temporarily <br />reclaimed steep slopes which are to be broadcast seeded. These methods may include dozer tracking or <br />development of roughened surface conditions during construction activities. Hydromulching broadcast <br />seeded areas or hydroseeding combinetl with hydromulching will be used as optional methods on difficult <br />sites. Hydroseeding and hydromulching are detailed below, Broadcast seeding will also be used in <br />concentrated shrub seeding areas. A Cyclone type seeder or F1FIow seeder will be used for broadcast <br />seeding operations. Broadest seeding rates, when: not specifielly noted, will be approximately double the <br />drill seeding rates. <br />Hydroseeding, followed by hydromulching, may be used on permanently redaimed steep slopes where <br />normal drill seeding operations are not feasible.
