• optional method to be used for establishment of shrub islands or groupings. This will be used in addition to
the mechanical or hand planting of seedlings in concentrated areas. Seed Mix No. 5 (fable 13-5) lists the
shrub species to be considered for seeding these areas. All speces are native to the site. The seed will be
•
broadcast on a roughened seedbed prepared by disking. If the soils are not excessively rocky, the site may
be harrowed to aid in lightly covering the seed. If harrowing is not possible, seeding of these sites should be
delayed as fate in the seeding season as practical. This witl allow the anticipated snow cover and freezing
and thawing to aid in covering the broadcast seed in areas which cennot be harrowed. Drill seeding will be
considered as an optional seeding method when applying this mix. The shrub seeding areas will not be
seeded with the permanent mix. Disking will be considered for suppressing volurdeering species present on
the replaced topsoil. Reducing herbaceous competition in these areas will enhance the potential far shrub
establishment and survival. When used, seeded areas will be approximately one to two acres in size and
will be located on north aspects or areas which may receive run-on moisture such as depressions or swales.
The small relative size and scettering of the sites will reduce erosion potential in these areas of low
herbaceous cover. On a per acre basis, this method of establishing shrubs is estimated to be as much as
eight times less expensive than the planting of seedlings; however, its effectiveness has been vadable. If
monitoring indicates a greater level of success in seeded versus planted areas, the seeding of concentrated
shrub areas will become the preferred shrub establishment method on remaining upland sites after CDMG
consultation and approval.
TABLE 13-5
SEED MIX NO. 5 -CONCENTRATED SHRUB SEEDING AREAS
Seeding Rate
P.L.S.
IbsrAcre Seeds/Ft.2
L
Amelanchier aln'dolia Saskatoon serviceberry 4,00 4.0
Amelanchier utahensis °f Utah serviceberry or 4,00 4.0
Artemisia tridentate vasevana Mt. big sagebrush 0.25 10.0
Prunus viroiniana Chokecherry 5.00 0.6
Svmohoriproos oreoohilus Mt. snowberry 4.00 6.8
Purshia tridentate Antelope bitterbrush 2.00 0_7
TOTAL 15.25 22.1
TR-37 13-17 Revised 04!05
