M-7-3 8, SAN JUAN COUNTY <br /> PROJECT SUMMARY <br /> Permitted: January 25, 1978 <br /> Financial Warranty: $447,543.00 (United Bank of Denver Letter of Credit) <br /> Acreage: 140 <br /> The Sunnyside Mine/Mayflower Mill is an underground metal mine and affiliated <br /> mill , north of the town of Silverton, San Juan County. <br /> Four tailings "ponds" are present at the millsite, adjacent to the Animas <br /> River. Tailings ponds 1 , 2 and 3 are inactive; tailings pond 4 will be <br /> utilized for mill tails deposition. <br /> Mine drainage emanates from both portals, the American and Terry Tunnels. <br /> Water treatment ponds produce sludge which has been deposited at the millsite, <br /> adjacent to the Animas River. Additional sludge will be disposed of atop <br /> inactive tailings pond number 3, to a depth determined by engineering <br /> stability analyses. Lake Emma, an alpine lake, was undermined as a result of <br /> the mining operation; the area of disturbance will be incorporated into the <br /> permit in a forthcoming amendment. <br /> MANAGEMENT PLANS <br /> I. Review the forthcoming amendment: <br /> 1 . Lake Emma stabilization and reclamation plans: in particular, <br /> hydrologic balance of the area: <br /> 2. Sludge disposal plan: <br /> A.
