Aerial
photographs were taken by Harry Ranney on August 22, 2012 at approximately 9:45 am. The weather conditions
appear to be overcast.
The Nu Mine is an abandoned, pre -law coal mine of which the Division has no records. The only information the
Division has about the Nu Mine are references made to it in the OC2 permit (C- 1980 -002). The suspected Nu
Mine portal is approximately .8 miles Northwest (310 degrees) of the OC2 Mine and is on private surface (photo
1). The exact location of the Nu Mine is unknown to the Division but its approximate location was detennined
from maps in the OC2 permit and structures (buildings, ponds, roads and tailings) seen in aerial photography.
Sometime prior to October 19, 1992, the surface ownership changed for the Nu Mine and the right -of -entry was
lost.
This inspection is in response to a citizen inquiry about the allegationthat equipment was left in the OC2 mine and
it might be leaking hydraulic fliud and contaminating the Ohio Creek drainage. From the OC2 Mine portal, the
mine workings slope down to the North. Water from the OC2 mine workings was directed to the back of the
workings toward the abandoned Nu Mine which lies to the Northwest and down gradient from the OC2 Mine. The
history of the Nu Mine and its exact location are unclear from the OC2 Permit, but at one time both of the mine
workings were interconnected. A concrete block seal with a drain was installed June 8, 1959 that separated the
two workings. According to the OC2 permit application (OC Mine Environmental Report, February 1, 1980, page
1), water from the OC2 Mine continued to drain to the Nu Mine, through its workings and was discharged at the
Nu Mine adit which then continued on to a stock pond.
AIR RESOURCE PROTECTION — Rule 4.17:
There was no indication of dust or sediment movement off the site or dirt road.
Number of Partial Inspection this Fiscal Year: 1
Number of Complete Inspections this Fiscal Year: 0
Page 2 of 5
