1988 Annual Report
Dear Mr. Perino:
The 1988 Annual Report for the Sunnyside Mine and Mill (April 1987 to March
1988), submitted to the Division by Frank Bergstrom,was received on
May 31 , 1988. The following response addresses questions needed to clarify
the Annual Report:
American Tunnel Portal Area (pgs 2+3)
1 . It is noted that additional waste rock was added to the American
Tunnel refuse/waste rock dump, and a second dump, immediately south
of the existing ore dump, was created. The report further states
that 1988 activities include sampling the newly deposited waste to
determine acid production potential .
Please submit acid waste analyses of the American Tunnel waste rock
and the proposed acid-generation mitigation plan, if applicable, as
soon as they are available.
As disposal of additional waste rock at the Sunnyside Mine was not
anticipated in Amendment No. 2, i.e. , the consolidation of the
original permit and all subsequent revisions from 1977 to March of
1987, it needs to be addressed.
A technical revision to the permit specifying that any proposed
waste rock disposal will be analysed for acid production potential
is required. The results of the analyses, with acid-generation
mitigation and monitoring plans, if necessary, should be submitted
to the Division for review and approval prior to disposal
commencement.
