MAYFLOWER MILL AR`r.A (continued) :
(2. ) Boulder Creek (BC-1 , B(7-2) , Table 2.
Data collected in October 1988 and April 1989 shows higher
concentrations of TDS and some dissolved metals below the
tailings ponds . TSS was lower below the tailings ponds in
October 1988; higher in April 1989 .
(3 ) Engineering Office Monitoring Wells (EOMW-I , EOMW-2) ,
Table 3 .
The October 1988 sample of these wells shows unusually high
TDS and dissolved metals . The April 1989 sample shows more
historically normal results , with water quality values the
same or below those found in the Animas River . It is
suspected that the positive pressure hand-held pump used in
filtering the samples in October 1988 may have been
malfunctioning, contaminating the dissolved metal. sample
with suspended solids . The April 1989 sample reflects the
vacuum filtrated lab method referred to in Fart II of this
Section.
(4 ) Animas River (AR-3 . 5 , AR-4) , Table 4 .
There appears to be no significant difference in TSS , TDS,
pH , or dissolved metals between AR-3 . 5 (upstream) and AR-4
(downstream) . It is noted that the river was sampled at a
relatively high volume in April 1989 due to an unseasonable
warm spell which resulted in early run-off . The sites were
resampled in May 1989 at loser water , with results still
pending.
AMERICAN TUNNEL AREA:
(1 ) Cement Creek (CC-1 , CC-2) , Table 5.
The American Tunnel Discharge (AT004) is reflected in the
differences between CC-1 and CC-2 . Average flow for AT004
is 2 . 2 mgd, which can be as much as 990 of the flow sampled
at CC-2 . During 1988-1989 , the Sunnyside made progress
toward meeting the NFDES limits for AT004 through addition,
of lime and non- ionic ,polymer . Improved consistency in
water treatment , a higher pff and Lower dissolved :petals is
reflected later in the year . Lime treatment accounts for
higher 'TDS, hardness , and calcium in CC-2 . The abnormally
high TSS volume for CC-2 in January 1.989 is unexplained as
AT004 TSS value for that day was 28 mg/l. The abnormally
high Zinc value in August 1988 may be related to the pond
cleaning which was occurring on the day of the sample .
- 8 -
