American Tunnel Portal Area
During 1987 and the winter of 1988 considerable waste rock was
ad-ed to the waste dump as a result of driving a ramp from Main Level
(American Tunnel Level ) to F Level, and a run around for the Main
Lev-el rail line. Driving these waste headings and disposal of this
rock at the surface was not anticipated as of the writing of the
Consolidated Permit (Amendment No. 2 to M-77-378 ) . Therefore , the
an-icipated covering and reclamation work on the Anerican Tunnel
waste dump could not be carried out (Plate 1 ) . Trash exposed on the
north flank of the waste dump was covered with borrow material during
July 1987 , and subsequently, waste rock has been added to this cover.
With the snow melt in the Spring of 1988 a low relief drainage
swale will be constructed and maintained across the road giving
access to the settling pond area from Highway 110 . Runoff from the
mire area can run down this road into the settling ponds, creating
mirror rilling on the unvegetated road and pond slopes .
Several tractor-trailer loads of scrap iron consisting of drums ,
locomotives , decking, piping, machinery, fencing, ore cars , and vent
tubing were hauled away by a recycler. General clean-up and trash
removal was also accomplished in the yard and warehouse areas .
Considerable improvements were made to the water treatment
systems. A new reagent facility was constructed for treatment of the
portal waste water. The former dry hydrated lime feed system was
replaced by a 60 ton bulk quick lime silo and lime slaker system for
-2-
