Topsoil Stripping
As used in this Permit Application, topsoil means the lower portions of the diagnostic A
horizon and the uppermost portion of the B horizon as defined in Rule 4.21.4(5) and rule
4.25.3(1)(A) & (B). Subsoil corresponds to the lower portions of the diagnostic B
horizon and C horizon. The topsoil stripping procedures for the proposed NHN Mine
Area will be performed as follows: The topsoil thicknesses for the soils in the NHN
Mine Area are relatively shallow, and due to the size of the equipment used, it is
proposed that topsoil and subsoil be combined into one salvageable layer of topsoil for
stripping and respreading. It is very difficult to strip thin layers of topsoil using such large
equipment. The average stripping thickness for the combined horizons is depicted in the
table found on Map 2.04.9 -3, New Horizon North Mine — Topsoil Salvage Map. The
mine foremen and equipment operators will be trained on the stripping of the combined
horizon soils and will know to stop the removal when coarse fragments extend to the
upper limit of 20 % by volume as directed by the DRMS and as estimated in the field on
the field pedon descriptions and which are shown on Map 2.04.9 -3, New Horizon North
Mine — Topsoil Salvage. The table on this map shows the average areas and volumes
obtained from each soil mapping unit sampled. The volume of topsoil to be stockpiled is
estimated at 220,000 bank cubic yards of which approximately 60,000 bank
cubic yards will be the Progresso soils from the Garvey property which will be stored in a
separate pile. See Map 2.05.3(3) -3 for approximate pile configurations and slopes.
On the Garvey property on the Intensively Managed Irrigated Pasture areas
corresponding to the more productive Progresso (PRO 81 & PRO 82) soils corresponding
to soil polygons 34, 39 and 45, and REC soil from polygon 42, as shown on Map 2.04.3,
Land Use Map and Map 2.04.9 -3, Topsoil Salvage Map would be salvaged separately
and stockpiled separately from the (78 PIN) soils found in soil polygon 38 and the REC
soil found in soil polygon 44. In addition, to enhance the potential productively of the
proposed Intensively Managed Irrigated Pasture (IMIP) reclaimed areas which will be
largely located downslope and to the west of the relocated Second Park Lateral ditch, the
Progresso (PRO 81) soils currently located in soil polygon 35 east of the Second Park
Section 2.05.4(2)(d) Page 13 January 2012
