Sunnyside Basin M-77-378
Page 2
RECLAMATION PLAN:
The goal will be to decrease the amount of near surface groundwater
entering the Sunnyside Mine through the backfilled Lake Emma hole
at the backfill-rock contact. Surface water infiltration will be
minimized by the reclamation plan for the hole (ie. sloped top with
an under-layer of clay) .
The goal will be accomplished by excavating surface ditches to
bedrock contact where possible and diverting the intercepted water
to the rock trench south of the backfilled Lake Emma hole. The
rock trench is the deepened former outlet for Lake Emma. The
intercepted water will be diverted to the rock trench either by
open ditch or by a buried drain pipe system or combination of both.
The decision to use a drain pipe or an open ditch or nothing (just
backfill the excavation) will be a field decision based on;
1) the depth of the rock contact.
2) the amount of groundwater flow intercepted.
3) whether expected surface runoff can be accommodated with an
open ditch without major erosion control construction features .
A phased approach will be taken towards reaching the above goal .
Each additional phase will only be undertaken if field evaluations
confirm feasibility and is warranted (judged by the remaining
quantity of groundwater entering the Sunnyside Mine through the
former Lake Emma hole) . The separable phases in order of
feasibility and planned construction are listed below and shown on
plate 1.
Phase Location In Relation To Lake Emma Hole
1 Northeast (460 feet of Profiled Length)
2 East to Southeast towards rock trench
3 Northwest to Northeast
4 West to Southwest towards rock trench
General Specifications
Ditch - See Figure 1 for typical section.
Slope - The profile of the ditch (es) will depend on the contour
of the bedrock contact and surface topography. A minimum
slope of 2% will be maintained by following the bedrock
contact and blasting the ditch bottom to grade where
required. No maximum grade will be maintained. Erosion
should not be a problem as the ditch invert will be on
the rock contact.
