TR-019 Request
Page 3
mine Pool Alkaline Injection
This project involves the injection of alkaline waters into
the mine pool to speed physical equilibrium and to allow the
mine pool to approach chemical equilibrium from a basic pH.
By initially raising the pH of the mine pool, the initial
water quality of the mine pool prior to chemical equilibrium Lk
will be improved and waters entering the fracture system to
restore hydrologic equilibrium will be of improved quality.
Implementation of this project will require the temporary
installation of pumps, piping and possibly solution mix
equipment within the permit area.
There are two potential injection sites within the permit
areas. These are the Terry Tunnel adit and the Sunnyside
Basin ventilation adit entry.
Each site is advantageous under differing circumstances
although SGC would prefer to use the Terry Tunnel for the
first stage of the process due to favorable site logistics.
Access is easier for the quantity of material involved and
spill containment structures that could be incorporated into
the setup already exist at the Terry Tunnel.
Setup would include a pump to draw water from Eureka Creek and
piping to connect to the Terry Tunnel bulkhead piping. Check
valves will be required to prevent back flow conditions at
this site. A solution mix setup and solution injection pump
will also be required. These will be set such that the Terry
Tunnel settling ponds will serve for spill containment. The
same features will be required at the Sunnyside Basin site
although the system could be somewhat smaller due to limited
water supplies and logistics of transporting the alkaline
material to the site. The Lake Emma subsidence would be
incorporated into the spill containment system. That way any
spills would be contained and end up at the final destination
(ie the mine pool) without extensive cleanup activities to
protect the waters of the State in the event of material
spillage.
The type of alkaline material (ie lime, dry caustic or caustic
solution) to be used to supply alkalinity to the mine pool has
not been decided to-date. This should not matter as each
resuirea--the_same basic _setup.
This project willbe active through the first field season
after bulkhead valve closure and depending on evaluation, the 7
second field season after valve closure also.
