Box 247 Silverton, Colorado 81433 / RE: Sunnyside Mine - File No. 77-378 Dear Mr. Murray: As per recent phone conversation I have had with you and Mr. Dave Moody, I am sending a letter to confirm items which should be addressed for any temporary' disposal of mine water treatment sludge.,,-At minimum, the following items should be a r 1 . Location - The site for this disposal of sludge is of utmost importance. A map locating the area and drainage area above the site is required. The size of the actual acreage required should also be included. 2. A drainage control plan for the site and hydrologic data and calculations should also be submitted for the system design. A 100-year, 24-hour design criteria is required. 3. The geochemistry and chemical characteristics of the sludge is required. Samples of the sludge should be taken and results submitted to the Division. Mr. Murray and I have thoroughly discussed elements, ions and parameters that should be analyzed. 4. As you have stated, the proposed disposal site location at this time is the Tailings No. 3 pond. Please discuss water quality and handling of draining this site of existing standing water. 5. Please discuss and describe any emergency overflow for the disposal area and if it is necessary. Will a spillway be necessary or will there be adequate freeboard to contain the volume from a 100-year, 24-hour event. 6. The Division will require that a disposal area be lined or that the base achieve permeabilities of less than 10-6 cm/sec. We would strongly recommend a geomembrane liner.
