In conjunction with the field program, in-place surface density and
moisture tests were taken of the pond materials using a Pacific Campbell
Nuclear Density Device. See Table 2 for summary of these results.
The soil conditions encountered during the test drilling consisted
of the following: Holes 1 and 2 were drilled at the site of a proposed
extention to tailings pond #3. These holes encountered 21 .5 to 22 feet
of silty, clayey gravels, with some cobble and broken rock material . Generally
below this depth in the test holes encountered coarser gravel , larger cobbles
and/or boulders of broken rock. Difficult drilling was experienced from
depth 24.5 to 31 feet in hole 2 (elevation 9387.5 to 9381 feet). Free
0° water was encountered in these test holes at depths of 14 and 26 feet,
respectively (elevations 9396.5 and 9386 feet).
The remainder of the test holes were drilled on top of the existing
tailings pond embankment. At the time of the test hole drilling, the construction
of an earthen berm in front of the sand tailings had been completed. The
test holes drilled on the embankment generally encountered 10 to 32 feet
0 of berm material consisting of clayey, silty glacial gravel with cobbles
and large boulders. This material was excavated from west of the pond
Site and is typical of the glacial moraine valley deposit. Below the berm
at elevations 9450 to 9424 feet, coarse grained sand tailings were encountered.
Some interbedding of very fine grain slime tailings was noted in the sands.
Large deposits of very fine grained slime tailings were noted in holes
6, 7A, 8, 9 and 9A, below depths of 25 to 48 feet (elevations 9434 to 9407
feet). Original ground, consisting of glacial moraine deposits, was encountered
at depths of 23 to 53 feet (elevations 9440 to 9403 feet). These deposits
-2-
