INTRODUCTION
This report presents the results of a geotechnical investigation
conducted at the site of the existing #3 tailings pond for the Standard
Metals Corporation Silverton Mill , Silverton, Colorado. The primary purpose
0 of this investigation and analysis was to determine the stability of the
existing tailings embankment, to make recommendations for adding additional
height to the embankment, and to recommend any corrective action which
needs to be taken for stability of the existing embankment.
Factual data gathered during the field and laboratory work is summarized
in Figures l through 14, and Tables 1 and 2. The results, conclusions
and recommendations discussed below, are based on the data gathered during
the field and laboratory work, analytical analysis of the existing conditions,
and our experience with similar soil conditions.
FIELD PROGRAM
Eleven test holes were drilled by F. M. Fox and Associates, Inc.
® on 'March 31 through April 4 of 1976. Refer to the Figure 1 for the Test
Hole Locations. The holes were drilled utilizing either a four inch diameter
continuous flight power auger or an eight inch diameter hollow stem continuous
(7 flight power auger. The materials encountered in the test holes were logged
by an engineer of this office on the site during the drilling operations.
The various soil strata encountered during the drilling is shown on the
• Logs of Test .Holes, Figure 2. The soils were sampled utilizing a California
Sampler from which standard penetrations as well as samples for laboratory
analysis were obtained. In addition, thin wall Shelby Tube samples were
extracted for laboratory testing.
-1-
