The Colorado water
administration officials have advised SGC of a water rights "call"
on the existing flows by holders of senior water-rights. This
"call" may be enforced under Colorado law. Therefore, SGC cannot
appropriate water to inject alkaline material or speed physical
equilibrium until this call on the water-rights has ended. This is
anticipated to be around mid-October when the irrigating season has
ended.
SGC does not want to end the alkaline injection program for the
1996 field season without making an effort to adjust the program
for the circumstances involved. Therefore, SGC plans to inject a
lime slurry down the Sunnyside Basin vent raise to the ore-pass
which will provide the mixing with underground waters necessary for
mine pool pH adjustment. Corresponding quantities of water will be
released from the American Tunnel to meet the requirements of the
State Water Engineer of not appropriating water while the water-
right call on the Animas River is in effect.
