PROJECT IDENTIFICATION:
Peabody Coal Company
Phoenix Project Drill Site
PROJECT LOCATION:
Montrose County, Colorado
Maps: Nucla, Colorado USGS 7.5' Quad 1960
Drill Site and Road Segment Location
Section 25, 36 T 47N R16W
Section 6 T 46N R 15W
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project is described as an experimental drilling program with
associated new access road construction. Surface disturbing
activities will consist of flat blading of new access roads 8 to
10 feet wide and blading or leveling of small (est. 20'x20')
drilling locations to accomodate a truck mounted drilling rig.
PROJECT SETTING:
The project is generally situated on a series of dissected
hilltops in Second Park. There are a series of SW -NE trending
ridge spurs and canyons. The area is characterized by mesas and
canyons exhibiting sharply eroded cuts and draws, canyons and
ridge spurs. The area is drained by a dendritic pattern of
intermittent headwater streams which trend south and west joining
the San Miguel River.
Vegetation in this area includes sagebrush, with most of the
drill sites located in irrigated pasture.
Soils are sand loam and sand, tan in color, shading to a light
brown where stained by vegetation. Visibility throughout the
block was fair to poor due to variable and often dense grass
cover.
The entire project is part of the San Miguel River system to the
southwest.
Elevation of the project area ranges from 5780 to 5540 feet above
sea level.
Observed fauna includes elk, mule deer, song birds, coyotes,
beaver, rabbits, golden mantled ground squirrels, chipmunks,
mice, raptorial birds and rattlesnakes.
Previous 'disturbance was evidenced by erosion, modern grazing
activities, cultivated irrigated pastures, animal burrowing and
trailing, and road construction.
