depth; 3) the absence of fire pit activity, surface or
subsurface structures, or ceramics; 4) the absence of any
diagnostic projectile points preventing accurate dating
of the site; and 5) the completeness of recording accomplished
upon the original recording of the site. Every attempt was made
to locate all surface artifacts with 56 being located and
recorded. The individual artifacts were not mapped as WCRM,
Inc. considers intra -site mapping to be a form of mitigation
and not a cultural resource inventory.
It is, therefore, recommended that neither 5MN1257 or
5MN1258 be found eligible to the National Register of Historic
Places. Site 5MN1257 is an Archaic site dating between
7000 BP to the early Historic. The Archaic is one of the
better understood time periods in Colorado prehistory with
many Archaic sites being recorded and studied. The absence
of diagnostic projectile points prevents dating the site more
specifically. Site 5MN1258 has been impacted by cultivation
causing a partial loss of site integrity (see Ford and Rolingson
1972; Medford 1972; McManamon 1976; Roper 1976; Sterud n.d.;
Talmage and Chester 1977).
13
APR 91980
