for the purpose of manufacturing chipped stone tools.
As discussed elsewhere in the text, the surface of Site
5MN1258 has been destroyed by cultivation. Only four
artifacts were recorded for this site: two ground stone and
two chipped stone. It was still recorded as a site, rather
than as an isolated artifact, because of the presence of
both ground and chipped stone. Due to this site's severe
loss of contexual integrity, WCRM, Inc. recommends 1) that
this site not require further work; and 2) that it not be
found eligible to the National Register of Historic Places.
A portion of Site 5MN1257 appears to have received little
impact in comparison to the surrounding terrain. Due to its
close proximity to the modern ranch house and the associated
ranching activities, it is possible that selected artifacts
may have been collected from the site. Only one projectile
point fragment was recorded on the site which seems a low
number considering the otherwise rich artifact inventory. A
total of 56 artifacts were located and recorded for 5MN1257
(see artifact inventory listing attached to OSAC Site Form
for Site 5MN1257).
Eleven artifacts were macro - photographed (close -up) with a
Pentax K -1000 macro lens to provide a photographic record'of
a random selected number of artifacts (Figures 11 - 20,
representing 5MN1257 and Figure 21, 5MN1258). These artifacts
have been designated with an asterisk in the above mentioned
artifact inventory list. Outcrops of parent bedrock are
frequently exposed on Site 5MN1257 indicating shallow soils.
The site is covered with sagebrush and appears to have experienced
some wind deflation and sheet erosion. The southern portion
of the site has been disturbed by activities of unknown origin;
the western portion by ranching activities; the eastern portion
by a road; and the northern portion by a dirt road.
WCRM, Inc. recommends that 5MN1257 not be found eligibile
to the National Register of Historic Places due to 1) the
magnitude of ground disturbance occurring on all but the northern
portion of 5MN1257; 2) the frequent occurrence of exposed bedrock
indicating shallow soils and, therefore, negligible cultural soil
12
APR 9 1980
