INSPECTION REPORT - PAGE 2
FILE NO. M-77-378
DATE: October 16, 1985
OBSERVATIONS OF IMPORTANCE:
1 . The inspectors met with Doug Murray and Dave Mooty at the Silverton
office. The technical revision and accompanying maps, outlining measures
mitigating possible violations previously observed on site, were presented to
the Division staff and deemed complete. The technical revisions contents were
discussed and correlated with an ensuing field inspection of the American
Tunnel , Engineering Building site, and Tailings Ponds Number 3 and Number 4.
2. American Tunnel Site,
A. Refuse disposal plans include the construction of a diversion ditch
above a rock drain from the toe of the present dump westward, draining
into the south fork of Cement Creek. Metal will be segregated from
other trash to be sold as scrap.
B. Sludge resulting from mine water discharge requires removal from the
four (4) ponds into which it has settled. Samples of mine-water
treatment sludge are currently being analysed. Utilization of Tailings
------Pond #3 as a temporary' storage site was discussed. Permeability
tesonalysis an approval of Tailings Pond #3 slimes are required prior
to the placement of sludge at that site.
3. Terry Tunnel
A. Sludge removal from the ponds at the Terry Tunnel will be disposed of
in a similar manner as the American Tunnel sludge. It was mentioned
that Terry Tunnel discharge may be drained into the American Tunnel
discharge system, such that one water treatment facility could be
utilized. A water storage tank within the American Tunnel was also
discussed.
4. Tailings Impoundments
A. Tailings Pond number 3 was observed for suitability as a sludge
disposal site. Permeability test of slimes is required prior to sludge
deposition. Drainage diversions above the ponds will be constructed to
. divert water eminating from two springs downgrade of an existing
