April 16, 2012
Page 6
Photograph 3. BH -38 Looking North
Consistency of the subsurface materials, as determined by the SPT blow counts and SPT
penetration, varies with depth and location. Considering BH -38, from the ground surface down
to approximately 5 ft below ground surface (bgs), the material classifies as medium dense. From
5 feet bgs to approximately 30 feet bgs, the material predominately classifies as dense. At 30
feet bgs, bedrock was encountered and the consistency classifies as very dense to hard. The
relative consistency versus depth identified in BH -38 is consistent over the site, however the
dynamic sounding penetration test identified a somewhat less dense interval from 5 to 8 ft bgs,
although this material would classify as being medium dense. A consistency of very dense
applies to materials that receive greater than 50 blows for 12 inches of penetration.
Groundwater was not encountered in any of the borings advanced during the site
investigation. However, seasonal fluctuations in the groundwater surface can and do occur and,
therefore, groundwater levels may rise to within the depths investigated during certain times of
the year.
4.0 LABORATORY TESTING
Samples of mine waste from the current mine development D"A pile, and subgrade
materials from BH -38, BH -39, BH -40 and BH- 41were submitted to Knight Piesold's
Geotechnical Testing Laboratory in Aurora, Colorado for the determination of engineering
properties. Specific to the laboratory testing were index properties, in -situ consistency, and shear
Agapito Associates, Inc.
