t
August 1997 Monthly Report
Page 4
Planned activity for September includes completion of slope
reconstruction, start placement of capping material and start
reconstruction of excavated areas to final configuration.
- Sunnyside Mine Pool Mitigation - Alkaline Solution Injection
During the month of August, this project was active. A total
of 89 . 99 tons of alkaline material has been injected through
the Sunnyside Basin injection site from project start in July
through August 31, 1997 . Water injection to keep the alkaline
injection pipe clear and speed establishment of physical
equilibrium has totaled 4 . 0 MG from July 14 , 1997 - August 31,
1997 .
The water pool pH at the American Tunnel bulkhead at the end
of August, 1997 was 5. 25 and the bulkhead pressure was 312
psi. Sunnyside will continue to monitor these parameters.
Cement Creek Diversion and Water Treatment
Cement Creek diversion and water treatment was active
continuously throughout August. Due to Cement Creek flow
quantities, diverted flows for water treatment were controlled
throughout August. These treated flows ranged from 1021 GPM to
1041 GPM.
Attached are results from flow and quality monitoring of;
Cement Creek diverted for treatment (CC-1B) ; American Tunnel
flow before treatment (AT-INFEL) ; dissolved metals analysis of
the AT-004 discharge; and Cement Creek below the AT-004
discharge point (CC-20) for July samples and a portion of the
August samples. The remaining August results were not received
by the date of this report and will be submitted with the
September report.
Mainstem Stream Monitoring and Reference Point Stream
Monitoring
Sunnyside sampled the reference point (A-72) and the other
three USGS gaging stations (A-68, C-48 , and M-34) on August
13 , 1997 . Final results have not been received by the date of
this report and will be included with the September report.
Preliminary results indicate the results will be below the
mean of the reference data set for A-72 .
The provisional flow from the outside gage at A-72 for the
August 13 , 1997 sample was 101 cfs which is in the
intermediate flow category (100 < Q < 300 cfs) .
