August 1997 Monthly Report
Page 2
arrangement for access is planned until it becomes evident
that the work plan for this project requires implementation.
- Surface Mill Tailings at Eureka
This project was completed in July, 1997 and inspected by DMG
in August. According to the inspection report, DMG agrees that
this project has been completed according to the Consent
Decree work plan and MLR standards.
- Gold Prince - Mill Tailings
Mobilization for this project occurred in late July. The
portal seal and preparation of the consolidation site were
completed in August. An additional access agreement was
obtained from the owner of the land upon which tailings pile
T-3 is located and a Land Use Permit was obtained from the BLM
to implement the portion of the work plan affecting public
lands (i.e. removal of waste dump W-2 and use of a portion of
the consolidation area) . The need for these agreements became
apparent after site surveys were completed for implementation
of the work plan.
Preparation of the consolidation site consisted of stripping
topsoil and overburden and stockpiling for later use to
cap the consolidated waste piles and as required for plant
media in the areas where mine waste or tailings removal was
planned. An underdrain was placed in the consolidation area to
allow seepage that may exist in this area to pass under the
mine waste without contacting the mine waste.
A tailings containment was constructed with material from mine
waste pile W-2 in the dump expansion or consolidation area.
This containment was lined with geotextile and 40 mil PVC
liner. Tailings and ashes from tailings piles T-1, T-2 , and T-
3 were in the process of being collected at month end for
placement in this lined containment.
Planned activity for September includes completion of;
placement of tailings and ashes in this lined containment
area.
placement of the capping liner over this containment.
consolidation of waste piles W-1, W-2 , W-3 , W-4, W-5, and W-6
over and around the lined containment.
completion of the upland diversion ditch and County Road
realignment.
placement of neutralization material.
capping of the consolidated pile with overburden.
seeding, fertilizing, and mulching of the areas disturbed by
the waste consolidation work.
Site monitoring results for July are attached.
