July 1997 Monthly Report
Page 3
Preliminary results, from the bench test treated water
analysis, indicate that the system works well but there is
concern about the useful life of the system. Predictions of
useful life may be available in August.
The discharge from the Koehler adit increases by a factor of
10 with spring flows but it appears that the loading remains
constant. This indicates a fresh water inflow exists but
Sunnyside has not been able to find any indication that this
inflow originates on surface where it could be diverted.
Mobilization for project completion is planned for late
August.
- London Mine Portals - Waste Dumps
This is a "B List" project. Therefore, no work, permitting or
arrangement for access is planned until it becomes evident
that the work plan for this project requires implementation.
- Pride of the West Tailings
This project was active throughout the month of July. By July
31, a total of 52 , 450 cubic yards were excavated and hauled to
the on-site tailings pond (42 , 030 cubic yards) or to
Sunnyside' s Tailings Pond No. 4 (10,420 cubic yards) . A total
of 323 . 5 tons of alkaline material (quick-lime kiln dust) was
purchased through July 31 to add to the excavated tailings
upon placement in the on-site tailings pond or Tailings Pond
#4 .
Recommendations for final slope construction configuration
were received from Western Technologies. This included
•excavation of silty clay material to a 2 : 1 slope, placement of
slope and bottom drainage, and rebuild to a 4 : 1 slope with
sand material . This configuration should provide a stable
slope under static or earthquake loading conditions.
Planned activity for August includes final slope excavation
and reconstruction.
- Sunnyside Mine Pool Mitigation - Alkaline Solution Injection
This project was started at the end of July. By July 31, a
total of 14 tons of hydrated lime had been added to the mine
pool through the Sunnyside Basin injection site. Water
injection started on July 14 , 1997 . Through July 31, 1997 , a
total of 1. 4 MG was injected.
The main purpose of this water injection is to keep the
alkaline material injection pipe clean although it will also
serve to speed the establishment of mine pool physical
equilibrium.
