The
American Tunnel Mine Waste Dump is located on the South Fork Cement Creek, in
portions of the SW 1/4 of Section 16, T42N, R7W, NMPM, San Juan County.
Inspection Date: vl1'5/97 Inspection occurred from 9:00 am - 9:45 am.
SGC Representative: Larry Perino
DMG Inspector: Wally Erickson
Field Conditions: Overcast and warm, intermittent rain.
Observations: Reclamation backfilling and grading of the pre-law dumps and tailings
ponds on the north and south banks of the South Fork Cement Creek appeared to have
been completed in accordance with the conditions of the Consent Decree and in
accordance with the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Act and Hard Rock/Metal Mining
Rules and Regulations of the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board. Pre-law tailings
and dump material had been relocated from the Lead Carbonate Tailings Pond and
American Tunnel Mine Waste Dump to the Mayflower Pond 4. Relocated materials had
been neutralized with high pH materials at Mayflower Pond 4.
Lead Carbonate Tailings Pond area, located on the south bank of South Fork Cement
Creek, had been graded to blend with surrounding topography. Vegetative cover was
dense and diverse and satisfied reclamation requirements of the Act and Rules and
Regulations. A variety of grasses, clover, willow bushes, spruce and pine trees were well
established. Approximately 24 spruce and 50 willow bushes had been transplanted,
spruce transplants appeared to be thriving. Reclaimed area appeared stable, no evidence
of slumping, settling, or excessive erosion was observed.
