A mixture of swamp or wetland type seeds were
added to the seed mix for those areas.
Exposed tailings, in the project area were capped with a minimum of 14" of overburden material
to satisfy interim reclamation requirements of DMG for the site. These areas were also amended
with limestone, seeded with the "Mountain Mix" and mulched.
An area excavated below the water table was left unfilled to provide clear drainage through the
site and maintain minimum phreatic levels in the upstream areas. This water surface was forced
away from the reconstructed slopes by placement of the composted steer manure, limestone,
gravel mixture along the toe of the slope. The U-shaped pond on the northwest side of the
project area was cleaned and then rebuilt by recontouring the embankment area, (the original
embankment was tailings material).
This pond was rebuilt because Animas River water has the potential to enter this area during high
flows and/or high water table periods. By rebuilding the pond embankment, the embankment
directs these flows back towards the river instead of through the project area.
The borrow area for capping material was sloped, amended with limestone, planted with the
"Mountain Mix", and mulched
The east bank of the Animas River, bordering the project area, was rip-rapped to prevent the river
from eroding the banks and changing to a course through the project area. This would have
probably occurred in the future based on site topography and the bank erosion that was occurring
in this stream reach This work is in progress and should be completed by Monday.
Upon completion of grading and seeding, the sediment traps were cleaned, filled or contoured and
planted according to the methods previously explained Mulching of some areas is still in
