West Elk Mine 2011 Annual Hydrology Report 34
alluvium. This spring is seasonal and flow only occurs during peak flow conditions.
Spring J -7 has been monitored since 2006.
3.2.4.6 Spring J -10
Spring J -10 is located on the south side of the Dry Fork stream adjacent to the
Minnesota Reservoir flume. The source of this spring appears to issue from alluvium.
This spring appears to have perennial flow, but shows seasonal variations with very low
flows in the late summer and autumn months. Field water quality and flow were
measured in September 2010, and monthly baseline monitoring began in April 2011.
3.3 Groundwater Monitoring Program
Currently 18 wells are monitored in the MCC groundwater monitoring program
(Tables 6 and 7). This number does not include the following ten wells (SOM -2H, SOM-
16-H, 96 -27 -1, SO.W -1, SOM- 45 -H1, SOM -3E, SOM 13, SOM 129 -H, SOM- 23 -H -2,
and SOM -3B) that have been irreparably damaged, blocked, or have collapsed casing.
Wells 96 -2 -2 and SOM- 23 -H -3 were monitored, but were dysfunctional for part of WY
2011. Well SOM 129 -H was monitored in WY 2011, but has damaged surface casing
that allows runoff infiltration resulting in unreliable water quality and water level data.
The groundwater monitoring wells are divided into the following 6 categories for
discussion purposes:
• Facility Area Wells and Alluvial Wells
• Wells completed in the Barren Member above the F -seam
• Wells completed in the F -seam
• Wells completed in the E -seam
• Wells completed above the E -seam
• Wells completed in the B -seam
The locations of the groundwater monitoring wells are shown on Map 2. A
summary of the groundwater monitoring well characteristics is presented in Table 6 and a
summary of the groundwater monitoring program is presented in Table 7. The water
quality data for the period of record for all of the groundwater monitoring wells are
summarized in Appendix G.
June 2012 HydroGeo, Inc.
