August 1996 Monthly Report
Page 5
The water rights "call" went into effect on August 21, 1996
and was expected to last until mid to late October if fall
precipitation does not increase. Through the end of August
the following project-to-date quantities have been added to
the mine pool.
Water - 20.92 million gallons
Total Hydrated Lime - 361 tons
During the same period, a total of 31.8 million gallons were
released from the American Tunnel bulkhead to evaluate the
transport and mixing of the alkaline material within the mine
and to comply with the Animas River water rights "call" .
- Cement Creek Diversion and Water Treatment
Cement Creek diversion and water treatment was started on
August 2 , 1996 and throughout the remainder of the month the
entire Cement Creek flow at the diversion point was diverted
and treated before discharge back to Cement Creek at CDPS CP-
0029529 discharge point AT-004 .
Attached are results from flow and quality monitoring of
Cement Creek diverted for treatment; American Tunnel flows
before treatment, dissolved metal analysis of the AT-004
discharge and Cement Creek below the AT-004 discharge point.
These last two are identical because all of Cement Creek was
diverted for treatment in August.
- Mainstem Stream Monitoring and Reference Point Stream
Monitoring
The reference point sample at A-72 was taken on August 14.
The other three gaging stations were also sampled on August 14
by SGC. Results were not received in time for this report and
will be reported in the October submittal . Flow at A-72 at the
time of sampling was obtained from a USGS gage reading and by
using an updated USGS rating chart. It was 101 cfs which will
place this sample result in the intermediate flow category
(100 cfs < Q < 300 cfs) .
