i
August 1996 Monthly Report
Page 4
Access was gained to the Longfellow portal and a 4 inch
diameter drisco-pipe was connected to the cofferdam installed
previously by the DMG-Inactive Mine Closure Program. This
pipe was also extended around the Koehler pond in order to
isolate the pond for pH adjustment, drainage and potential
cleaning.
Work was started on constructing temporary upland diversion
ditches around the Koehler pond and Longfellow and Koehler
dumps.
With these diversions, SGC can begin to characterize water
quality, refine the plan for site remediation and gather
information for bio treatment system design.
Surveying for air photo site contour mapping was started.
Available information was on contour intervals too large for
adequate site planning.
Monitoring information is attached.
- London Mine Portals - Waste Dumps
This is a "B" list project and work on it is being deferred
pending results from implementation of the "A" list projects.
Preliminary contact with the owner of this property has been
made.
- Pride of the West Tailings
SGC has delineated the wetland disturbance for a Section 404
Permit application and submitted this delineation to the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers District Office for review. A
completed permit application will be submitted upon acceptance
of the delineation.
Complicated ownership issues along with apparent Mined Land
Reclamation Permit compliance issues at this site may delay
any work plan implementation until the 1997 construction
season.
SGC continues to work toward a final access agreement with the
site owners.
- Sunnyside Mine Pool Mitigation - Alkaline Solution Injection
This project was active throughout the month of August. At
the end of the month, an operational modification was made to
inject alkaline material at the secondary injection site in
Sunnyside Basin based on field conditions. The conditions
that precipitated this change are the availability of water to
supply lime solution in a dissolved state to the mixing zone
and a water rights "call" on the Animas River that prevented
SGC from appropriating more water than was released from the
American Tunnel bulkhead.
