Michael B Long
Division Director
RE: Pre-Law Tailings Relo ation at Howardsville Mill, Permit No. M-84-049,
Sunnyside Mine, Permit No. M-7-378, Consent Decree, Sunnyside Gold Corp.
Dear Mr. Perino:
Please find enclosed, DMG 2/25/97 memo, addressing relocation of approximately
64,000 cy of pre-law tailings located within the permit area for Howardsville Mill.
DMG preference is for SGC to relocate the pre-law tailings to Mayflower Mill Pond #4.
However, additional costs imposed by trucking pre-law tailings to Mayflower Pond #4,
may not be justified given the minimal in-stream benefits anticipated with the Mayflower
Pond #4 option over the Howardsville Mill Lower Tailings Pond option.
Given the low permeability of the existing tailings layer within the Howardsville Mill Lower
Tailings Pond, relocation of the pre-law tailings to the Howardsville Mill Lower Tailings
Pond, is appropriate. DMG approves relocation of pre-law tailings from the Howardsville
Mill permit area to Howardsville Mill Lower Tailings Pond, OR to Mayflower Pond #4.
DMG approval of pre-law tailings relocation to Howardsville Mill Lower Tailings Pond is
based upon the following condition:
Permit conditions require the operator to maintain 2' freeboard for the tailings
pond. Relocation operations conducted by SGC may not place operator in violation
of permit conditions by consuming the 2' freeboard or by violating other conditions
of the Howardsville Mill permit. If additional tailings disposal area is required for
SGC to complete its operation, SGC may execute one of the following three
options:
1 . Transport excess tailings to Mayflower Pond #4; OR
2. Submit appropriate geotechnical stability study of the proposed methods for
raising the tailings pond embankment, for DMG approval, prior to
commencement of embankment construction; OR
