File No. C05000-0375
3rd Quarter 1996 Report
Page 2
The American Tunnel valve has been opened and closed several times
since the alkaline injection project started on July 18, 1996. The
first closure was on July 29, 1996 . Since that initial closure,
the valve has been opened and water has been released through the
bulkhead in order to draw mine pool water to the bulkhead for
evaluation of the alkaline injection project and to meet water
rights requirements. The last closure occurred on September 9,
1996 and the valve has remained closed since that date.
Site inspections have not revealed any indication that the bulkhead
is performing other than as designed.
Injection Quantities
Alkaline injection was active from project startup on July 18, 1996
through September 30, 1996. During this period, a total of 410.5
tons of hydrated lime was placed underground with 301.9 tons pumped
through the Terry Tunnel bulkhead and 108.6 tons placed through the
secondary site in Sunnyside Basin.
Total quantity water and hydrated lime pumped underground was 31.6
million gallons. During this same period, a total of 40.6 million
gallons were released from the American Tunnel bulkhead to evaluate
the transport and mixing of alkaline material within the mine pool
and to comply with a water rights "call" on the Animas River.
Attached is a table of daily water volumes pumped underground
during the reporting period.
Please contact me if you have any questions on this report.
Sincerely,
Larry Perino
Reclamation Manager
cc: Kathleen Sullivan, CDPHE
Wally Erickson, DMG
