The closure bulkhead was not in solid rock. <br /> Therefore, SGC removed the bulkhead and inspected the tunnel for <br /> potential bulkhead sites. It was determined that because of the <br /> near surface fractures, two bulkheads would be required. One at <br /> approximately 150 feet from the portal beyond the fractures and one <br /> near the portal. This was confirmed by John F. Abel, Jr. during a <br /> site visit. The attached designs were prepared by Mr. Abel after <br /> that visit. <br /> The design head for the interior bulkhead was initially set at 20 <br /> feet. This is in excess of the 15 feet required to back the <br /> impounded water into the Sunnyside Mine according to mine maps. <br /> Efforts were made to confirm that this connection is intact as <br /> requested by Allen Sorenson (February 13 , 1996 - Mitigation Work <br /> Plans for Sunnyside Settlement) . This connection was not confirmed <br /> due to a timber cave-in although, air is freely moving through the <br /> cave and a minor amount of water (ie less than 5 GPM) was moving <br /> through during the inspection. <br />
