Star Mine Operations, LLC Revenue Mine MCP Plan 2012 <br />Mill. From the portal of the Mill Tunnel, to the sump, the floor, walls, and roof are lined with concrete <br />to seal the tunnel from water infiltration and chemical/material release or spill. <br />3.4 Handling and Release/Spill Response <br />As discussed in Section 3.3 the Mill tunnels are constructed to prevent any release of material from the <br />Mill. Should a spill occur, the sump is manually emptied into an approved waste disposal containers <br />and then the containers are sent to an approved facility. Minor spills of chemicals and their safe <br />handling are discussed below. Further detail on exposure levels and first aid measures can be found in <br />the MSDS sheets for each chemical located in Appendix A. <br />3.4.1 Zinc Sulfate - Crystalline <br />When handling zinc sulfate, the following PPE should be used: chemical splash goggles, and protective <br />gloves and clothing. A MSHA approved respirator should be worn if irritation or other symptoms are <br />experienced. Wash thoroughly after handling. Use with adequate ventilation. Minimize dust generation <br />and accumulation. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Avoid breathing dust. <br />In the event of a spill/release, vacuum or sweep up the material and place in a suitable disposal <br />container. Avoid generating dusty conditions and provide adequate ventilation. Zinc Sulfate is a water <br />pollutant and should not be emptied into drains. Spills in excess of 1,000 pounds are considered to be <br />reportable. Section 5 outlines the procedures for reporting. <br />3.4.2 Sodium Carbonate — Granular <br />When handling sodium carbonate, the following PPE should be used: protective eyeglasses or chemical <br />safety goggles, and protective gloves and clothing. A MSHA approved respirator should be worn if <br />irritation or other symptoms are experienced. It is recommended that Sodium Carbonate be only used <br />under a chemical fume hood. While handling sodium carbonate, minimize dust generation and <br />accumulation. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Do not ingest or inhale. Wash thoroughly <br />after handling. <br />In the event on a spill/release, vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal container. <br />Wear a self - contained breathing apparatus and appropriate personal protection. Avoid generating dusty <br />conditions. Provide ventilation. Do not let this chemical enter the environment. <br />3.4.3 Calcium Oxide — Powder <br />When handling calcium oxide, the following PPE should be used: tight fitting chemical safety goggles, <br />and protective gloves and clothing. A MSHA approved dust mask should be worn if conditions are <br />dusty. Protective cream should be used on any exposed skin. Wash thoroughly after handling. <br />In the event of a spill/release, sweep up material and re- containerize. Avoid using water or allowing <br />spill to contact water. <br />13 <br />
