approved an erosion control and tree planting project wherein a crew of twelve individuals would
work at the site for six weeks. However, at the last moment, problems within the National
Community Conservation Corps forced cancellation of the project.
FUTURE RECLAMATION
Future reclamation will be accomplished as finances allow. It is anticipated by Resources that
the final land exchanges will occur in 1998. Pending resolution of the Pitkin County suit, the
State hopes to receive additional funds from Resources liquidation plan in 1998.
Currently, reclamation construction plans for 1998 include completion of the following projects:
WASH PLANT DEMOLITION: A contract was awarded in the fall of 1997, with the
expectation that construction will begin as soon as ground conditions permit in the spring of
1998. This job entails demolition and disposal of all concrete structures which remain in the
vicinity of the old Wash Plant and office areas.
OLD REFUSE PILE EAST (HUNTSMAN): This project, funded by Abandoned Mined Land
Funds will help to remediate the potential problem of the Old Refuse Pile failing into adjacent
Coal Creek immediately downstream of the confluence with Dutch Creek. Coal refuse will be
cut from the Old Refuse Pile to obtain a gentler slope. The new slope will be topsoiled and
revegetated and trees planted on the slope. The refuse cut from the pile will be transported to the
vicinity of the old Wash Plant, and will be used to cover the concrete generated by the Wash
Plant Demolition Project.
DUTCH CREEK DIVERSION PROJECT: Dutch Creek will be diverted into a new channel to
be constructed in the early fall of 1998. This project will provide for a geomorphically stable
channel and allow for the abandonment of the Dutch Creek Flume. This project will be funded
by a grant approved by the OSM in 1997.
MINE 3 STEEP SLOPE REVEGETATION: The steep mine bench outslopes associated with
Mine 3 and with the Mine 5 fan will be revegetated using techniques demonstrated in previous
years at other outslopes. Along with these two slopes, steep cut and fill slopes along the access
roads to these sites will also be revegetated.
Reclamation planned for 1999 includes the following projects:
MINE 1 STEEP SLOPE REVEGETATION: The steep mine bench outslopes associated with
Mines 1 and 2 will be revegetated using techniques demonstrated in previous years at other
outslopes. Along with these two slopes, steep cut and fill slopes along the access roads to these
sites will be revegetated.
ROADS A, B, C, and D: The U.S. Forest Service, land manager for the bulk of the Mine
property, has designated that the post mining land use of the Basin will be non-motorized
8
