United States:- : Forest White River P. 0. Box 948
Department of Service National Forest Glenwood Springs,
.pIAgriculture. CO 81602
F•ario: 2720, MCR, Inc. Roads
Dan- September 16, 1986
r
Mr. George Wear
Mid-Continent Resources
201 Centennial Street, Suite 406
Glenwood Springs, Colorado 81601
t_
Dear Mr. Wear:
This is in response to your request for written documentation of the September
9, 1986, meeting which you and Doug Bowman of Mid-Continent Resources had with
Bill Floyd and Paul Bradley of the Sopris Ranger District, and Bob Berg, our
South Zone Engineer. The object of this meeting was for the Forest Service
to define the road width which would be needed for post-mining activities on
roads identified for retention in the Coal Basin area of the Sopris District.
Information on identifying specific roads for retention or obliteration was
not requested at this time.
The existing roads are designed for two-lane heavy hauling traffic and are
generally in excess of .fifty feet wide. The group discussed what post-mining
activities might be anticipated on any roads that would be left open. These
possible uses include: oil and gas exploration and development; dispersed
recreational use access to National Forest lands; Forest Service administra-
tive access; and development and administration of a downhill ski area.
Considering the possible post-mining use, we conclude that the Forest Service's
minimum width two-lane access road would best meet the need for public health
and safety for the anticipated users. The specifications for this type of
road includes a sixteen-foot wide driving surface with an additional sir.-foot
allowance for drainage structures, for a total road width of twenty-two feet.
If you are in need of further information regarding this matter, please let
me know or directly contact Bill Floyd on the Sopris Ranger District.
Sincerely, -
e
WOODROW
ervisor
s Ranger District
Zone Engineers
PB/dl
S
