f
Mr. Jrm Herron
January 26, 1983
Page 3
5. WILDLIFE
This area is used primarily by the deer and elk as a summer grazing
area. It is used also by the Cattle Association on a two-year
rotational basis. It has been proposed by Mid-Continent to construct
a cattle fence (4'+) along the northern drainage boundary of Bear
Creek, from the No 4 Mine road to Coal Creek. This route has been
ridden by the USFS and the Cattle Association and they both agree it
would be a good idea to restrict movement of the cattle into the old
and new waste disposal areas.
Impact on Wildlife: From Mid-Continent's past experience, the deer
and elk would not be impacted by this project. Deer and elk can be
seen feeding on the edge and crossing the old refuse pile on almost
any given day of the summer. The area of the new waste pile does not
lie in a critical habitat (i.e. , calving area) for either deer or elk,
and is thought to be of negligible impact on the wildlife of the area.
6. ROADS (4.03) (See Geo-Hydro Report, Sheet 7.)
We feel that all the requirements of 4.03 have been met. Temporary
erosion control measures will be implemented, using straw or hay, and
the road will be seeded and mulched following completion. The entire
area will also be controlled by sediment ponds which will be constructed
as soon as there is access (road completed) .
7. POST-MINING LAND USE (See Vol. 7, Chapter VI.)
The post-mining land use is the same as the entire Coal Basin permit
application:
a. Recreation
b. Fish and wildlife habitat
c. Rangeland
The alternate land use will be a ski area.
8. ACREAGES IN PERMIT
The appropriate maps and verbal descriptions have been changed in the
permit application.
If you have any questions or need any additional information, please call.
Sincerely,
Environmental Coordinator
DWBowman:ms
