Box 3253 Michael B Long
Alpine, Wyoming 83128 Division Director
RE: Coal Basin Mine Grazing Project
Dear Ms Lamming:
I wanted to take this opportunity to summarize our conversation of June 30, 2000
at the Coal Basin Mine, and to confirm the use of your goats to graze certain
portions of the Coal Basin Mine as part of the on-going reclamation process.
As we discussed, certain portions of Coal Basin have a serious noxious weed
infestation. As part of our long term treatment strategy, your goats will be used
to graze three areas of the mine. It is my understanding that you will provide
approximately five hundred goats for this purpose. It is anticipate that the goats
will arrive on or about July 10, 2000, and that you will graze them for about six
full days. The cost of providing this service to the State of Colorado will be
$2,990.00.
The major weed species of interest to be grazed include oxeye daisy, plumeless
thistle, Canada thistle and houndstongue. It is my understanding that the goats
will also graze the heavy stand of yellow sweetclover which is present on the Old
Refuse Pile.
The areas to be grazed are the north facing portion of the Old Refuse Pile (6
acres), a south and west facing portion of the Sutey Refuse Pile (approximately 6
acres) and an approximately three acre area north and west of the Sutey Refuse
Pile. I am attaching a sketch which depicts these areas.
Our highest priority is to control the weed infestation at the Old Refuse Pile. This
area should be grazed first, and most intensely. This area is most easily
accessed via a wood decked bridge located a few hundred yards downstream of
the refuse pile on Coal Creek.
