previous plantings show no evidence of seedling emergence. This third planting is
a continuing effort to establish this material via direct seeding. Rows were laid out
east to west on the north side of several spruce trees. Soil was moist in direct
sunlight and muddy in the shade. Foot packing was done prior to belt seeding.
Seeding depth was approximately one quarter to one half inch. Seeding rate was
heavy; the V-belt of the belt seeder was filled to capacity and soil was added as a
carrier and to prevent the seed from blowing out of the belt. It was felt that cooler,
moister soil conditions may mimic natural site characteristics more closely at the
time of floret shatter and when the species naturally seeds itself.
An additional single row planting was done in the bare root field using a hand held hoe.
Seed was sprinkled along the twenty foot row and covered and lightly packed.
Germination and Purity Determination
Germination trials were conducted by UCEPC's plant propagationist on Lot 1 seed (drill
ready). Test results indicated a 48 percent germination of this seed which was more than
adequate to pursue a field planting for this seed increase project. Purity was calculated by
taking four samples of seed ranging from 117 seeds in one sample to 368 seeds in a
second sample, weighing each sample as bulk seed and as cleaned seed, and averaging.
Calculations determined that seed weight was 1475 seeds per gram without callus hairs
and that 31% of a sample by weight was clean seed. Taken with the germination results,
the PLS factor for the seed was (0.31 x 0.48) 0.15.
Seeding rate calculations were done and packets prepared for use in the "cones" of the
Cone Seeder. Four 470 foot rows with 36" row spacings figures out to 0.13 acre.
• 470 ft row x 3 ft row spacing = 1410 square feet
• 1410 square feet/43560 square feet/acre = 0.03 acre/ row
• 0.03 acre/ row x (4 rows) = 0.1295 acre
Total Planting
Planet Junior 0.09 acre
Cone Seeder 0.13 acre
0.22 acre
Seeding Rate Calculations
Our desired seeding rate was 30 pure live seeds per linear foot. Accounting for
germination of 48 percent and purity of 31 percent, our PLS factor is 0.15.
30 PLS x 0.15 = 200 "seeds" by weight per linear foot of planting
