PROJECT WORK DESCRIPTION
The purpose of this Project is to apply various plant materials and other products to the steep
slopes that exist below the mine entry benches. Establishment of plant materials and
construction and placement of other products will help to inhibit slope erosion and sediment
contribution to Coal and Dutch Creeks.
The slopes to be treated exist at or near the angle of repose at an elevation approaching 10,000
feet. They are generally composed of sand to cobble sized material derived from sandstones
and shales that have been down-cast as a result of the construction of the overlying mine entry
benches. The slopes are steep, remote and difficult to access and to work on.
Typically, the Project will progress in the following manner. Each slope will be hand scarified in
order to disrupt the soil crust and to promote the potential for seed to rest in small niches on the
slopes. Brush layering may occur at one slope area. Straw wattles will be placed in selected
locations at the crest of the slopes, and periodically on the slopes and at the toe of the slopes.
Bands of trees and shrubs will be planted on the slopes and at the base of some slopes.
Fertilizer, seed, mulch and a tackifier will be applied to each slope. Finally, pre-vegetated wattle
logs may be installed at one slope area. Following completion of the slope revegetation
process, access ways to the sites will be scarified and reseeded.
The estimated acreage of each Mine Bench Outslope is tabulated below.
Mine Bench Estimated Outslope
Outsiope Name Accessed Via Roads Acreage
Mine 1 West B, D 7.7
Mine 1 East B, D 2.2
Mine 3 South E, F 3.5
Mine 5 South E, G 2.4
Total, Estimate 15.8
Work Tasks
The tasks included in the project are as follows:
Task 1: Mobilization and Demobilization
Task 2: Project Safety Plan
Task 3: Slope Scarification
Task 4: Tree Planting
Task 5: Shrub Planting
Task 6: Revegetation
Task 7: Hand Labor
6
