-2-
Section 2 - Hydrology Review
Due to the complexity and length of record of data available for the mine
site, the Division requires a further reduction and analysis of water sampling
data for the mine. The ultimate purpose is to provide a form where trends
developed at the mine can be identified and used by the operator to accomplish
a revision and updating of the Probable Hydrologic Consequences section of the
permit application. Specifically, the Division requires the following data or
reductions:
1 ) The mine discharge data should be plotted with TDS versus pumpage
rates for each mine in order to allow for a depiction of TDS versus flow rate
and develop a worst case loading on Coal Creek during a Q,7-10 low flow
event. The data for the 1984 year to date should be graphed. This graphing
should be continued in each annual hydrologic report.
2) For the surface water monitoring sites, graphs should be developed
depicting flow, TSS, TDS, and iron as originally accomplished in the permit
application, Volume 5, Appendix III-E-5.
3) The map depicting monitoring sites and NPDES pond effluent points
should be updated to include the mine discharge points.
4) For ground water monitoring sites, graphs should be developed
showing relationship of water level versus TDS, sulfate and, iron for the
period of record.
5) The ground water quality tables as submitted February 14, 1986
should include water level along with chemistry.
The hydrology section of the permit application requires updating to include a
narrative describing a detailed Probable Hydrologic Consequences of mining at
the Coal Basin Mines. A description of the following trends and possible
impacts should address:
1 ) Localized effects in each tributary to Coal Creek
2) Effects on Coal Creek
3) Effects on Crystal River
4) Effects on alluvial bodies and their interplay with the surface
regime
The following conditions existing at the mine site should be described and
their potential impact detailed:
1 ) Mine discharges
2) TSS off road system
