6. All couplings and the top trivet plate were tightened with
36-in pipe wrenches
7. Plumb of the monument was checked with a "pill box" level.
In general , monuments were installed to depths of 5 to 7 ft
before refusal . The deepest monument was installed to a depth of about
12 ft. All monuments were installed to a height of from 1 to 2 ft
above the ground.
Where bedrock lay at or near the surface, the monument installation
procedures were modified as follows:
1. The drill feature of the Pionjar hammer-drill was used to
drill a 1 .5-in diameter hole 2 ft into the rock
2. A monitoring point was then resin-grouted into the hole
This type of construction was required on four of the 43 points
installed in the monitoring net.
Construction of either the soil or the bedrock monitoring points
required a two-man crew. The average installation times for each point
was between 15 and 20 minutes.
Installation of the concrete control points required a minimum
crew of two individuals. Average construction time was 2 hours. It
should be noted that this construction time is based on all construction
operations being performed manually.
Monument Removal
The conditions of the Forest Service Special Use Permits required
that all installed survey control points and subsidence monitoring points
were to be removed at the end of the project.
21
