INTRODUCTION
The contents of this report are the
results of a slope-stability analysis for a proposed fill to be
constructed as a part of the Mid-Continent Resources tunnel pro-
ject, located cā¢.est of Redstone, Colorado. Soil characteristics
and slope geometry were analyzed in order to provide recommen-
dations for a stable slope configuration.
The fill itself is to be constructed
of material from the tunnel excavation. This material consists
of dense Mancos Shale, which will be excavated by blasting. The
fill will rest upon native glacial-alluvial deposits, consisting
of coarse gravel, cobble, and boulder-sized particles in a silty,
clayey, sand matrix.
For purposes of slope stability anal-
ysis, shear strength te:iting was pe,forx.ed on the native glacial
alluvial materials, and on the shale which will be used for fill.
The results of these tests are provided with this report.
A slope stability analysis was then
performed, using the shear strength test results, and assumed
slope geometries. For a slope having a 2-horizontal to 1-vertical
maximum gradient and two. terraces or benches of 10 feet in width,
with an approximate height of 60 feet (Plate 1) , the factor of
safety was found to be 3 . 5 . we would consider this slope config-
uration to be stable.
More complete discussion of the testing
program and stability analysis can be found in the body of this
report. All recommendations are subject to the limitations set
forth herein.
