t
the original permit application was prepared, over a decade ago.
Availability of suitable seeds was problematic, given the high
altitude requirements for the mine site. In addition, a nearby
nursery was available.
Mid-Continent believes that substitution of commercially available
seed is now a practical alternative, and in fact is more desirable.
Further, the Mt. Sopris nursery has closed. Therefore, Mid-
Continent proposes to obtain seeds of the same or similar species
for revegetation at the mine site from commercial sources.
Mid-Continent does anticipate transplanting of small trees and
shrubs found at the mine site. These would be transported, using
a front end loader, during dormancy.
Mid-Continent does request to remove Bromopsis inesmi , smooth brome
from the list.
5 (g) . Woody Plants
Trees will be planted as seeds, or as seedlings at a rate of
200/ac. , so as to allow for a 50% survival rate.
Shrubs will be planted as seeds and, if seeds are not available, as
seedlings. Seeded species will vary from aspen to such shrubs as
snowberry and oak. Seedlings will be planted at a rate of 250/ac.
As indicated, some transplanting may be done of small trees and
shrubs during dormancy. The rate will depend upon availability of
suitable seedlings. Planting of the seedlings will be done by
hand, digging a hole, placing the seedlings to proper depth, then
filling and firming the soil around the seedling.
5 (h) . Planting Procedures
Vol . 8, Chap. V, pages 37 and 38 have been revised to be more
descriptive of seeding techniques to be used for revegetation of
the disturbed areas of the mine site. They are found at Attachment
III-5-H.
5 (i) . Sampling Schedule
Map V-C-1 has been prepared to indicate the time period in which
seeding was done on the refuse pile areas. It should be placed in
Vol . 8 of the permit, and is found at Attachment III-5-I of this
submittal.
Planting of the Sutey pile began in 1988 , and the approved schedule
calls for sampling three years afterward (i .e. 1991) .
Mid-Continent Resources
Mid-Term Review
Responses - 6/91 7
