Ms . Candace Thompson
January 24 , 1986
Page three
The total length of the proposed road section is 7500 feet , or
1 . 42 miles . The portion on the White River side is 1300 feet or
approximately of a mile . The portion on the Gunnison side is
6200 feet or 1 . 2 miles . The grade on the White River side from
the present road to the top of the ridge is 8% . Extending from
the top of the ridge north on the Gunnison side the road is
practically level for 3200 feet . It then decends at 5% grade for
approximately 800 feet, is level for another 1600 feet and finally
climbs the last 600 feet at 3% grade . These ups and downs on the
Gunnison side are necessary in order to take advantage of natural
terrain features , minimize removal of trees and reduce the
visual effect of the road as much as possible . The slopes on
both sides of the ridge vary from about 25% to as much as 75%
one area . See map at Enclosue #4 for slope readings at several
points along the proposed roadway.
The planned design characteristics of the road are the sar.,e
as for the 4200 foot extension on the fee land . That is , a 12
foot wide road bed , cut and fill slopes of lv : 1 . 5h wherever the
terrain will allow and culverts of at least 18 inch diameter
at locations determined by the detailed engineering . See drawings
accomplished by Schmueser & Associates , Inc . for the fee land
extension portion.
Once the Gunnison Forest people give their approval of the
road alignment, the detailed design engineering will be accomplished
and made available to all parties concerned . Also , the vegetation
and soils field surveys will be completed and the reclamation plan
prepared as soon as weather permits .
A recommended public notice is enclosed and labeled Enclosure
#5 .
With the information furnished herein it is requested that
concept approval of this section of road be given so that the
Gunnison National Forest will complete their assessment and the
technical revision can be finalized and submitted for approval .
If there are any questions on this proposal , please call me .
Sincerely,
7
Geo e E . wear
Director , Special Projects
GEW: rm
Enclosures
