Page 2
trophy mule deer, bear and many other wildlife species.
No motorized vehicles are permitted. It is one of the most
environmentally sensitive areas I have studied in the '20
years I have resided in Colorado. Many landslides have and are
occuring in the area due to the unstable nature of soils
and steep topography.
I am very concerned about two main issues. First, it is my
opinion that the construction of this road will cause a
visable scar near the top of the west side of the Huntsman
which will be noticable from most areas of the Muddy Creek
basin. This specific area contains mature spruce and fir,
and is the summer range for trophy mule deer and elk.
What impacts from construction and future use of this road
by mine personnel will occur to the resident deer and elk
herd?
Secondly, I am most concerned about the venting of Methane
gas from these initial wells, and am more specifically outraged
by the proposal to construct a future portal and exhaust fan
above my ranch in Section 24.
The exhaust fan located on the opposite side (east) of the
Huntsman can be heard most times of the year and is most
noticable in the winter months. This fan, as stated, is
on the opposite side of the mountain.
The concept of a new exhaust fan and the emission of toxic
methane gas being blown over my ranch, the Dr. Dennis
Hartshorn ranch, the Sperry, the Olson, the Noble, the
McIntyre, the Mitchell, the Rominiki, the Clathis, the
Tooker, the Rentz, the Jacobs, the Spadafora, and other
ranches in the Muddy Creek basin is unacceptable.
I am not against utilizing our energy resources, but am
totally opposed to the concept of bulldozing access roads
in steep, visable, and environmentally sensitive areas that
will be greatly damaged if a noisy exhaust fan is constructed,
blowing poisonous fumes over and across our properties.
As stated in your letter, you wish to receive comments by
October 30, 1985. It is unclear to me, however, as to
what impact statements or studies and/or hearings will
occur after that date.
