Box 1030 Paonia, Colorado 81428 Gentlemen; Pursuant to your letter of September 30, 1985, I am writing in response to the proposal by Mid-Continent_Coke and Coal Company to construct a road near the top of the Huntsman Ridge, located in Pitkin and Gunnison Counties. After a careful examination of your letter, and discussions with Mr. George Wear and Mr. Mike Ward, it is my understanding that Mid-Continent desires to construct a new road near the top of the ridge rather than follow the existing abandoned switch back routes which traverse the area in a lower con- figuration. The road will commence in Pitkin County, Section 20, and terminate in Gunnison County, Section 18. It is also my understanding that Mid-Continent desires to drill three degasification wells at the termination of said road, which will be encased with steel liners. Some harnessing of gas at the surface may occur in Section 18, Gunnison County. Also, the map indicates that a rock tunnel and a future portal area will be constructed in a southwest alignment terminating in Section 24, Gunnison County. I am the owner of a 730 acre working cattle ranch located in Section 2 and Section 11, TWP 11 South, R 90 W, 6 PM Colorado and have hunted and hiked this area for approx- imately 15 years. My foreman, Mr. Brian Mitchell, and his family reside year round at my property. The Muddy Creek Basin, and more particularly, the Huntsman, is a sportsman' s paradise. It is an area of steep terrain, unstable soils, and contains mature aspen, spruce, fir, and scrub oak timber interspersed with open meadows.
