With a 32-foot reach (approximately 90% machine capacity) , a 245 backhoe can complete
one cycle every 35 seconds (pg. 95, CH) . The bucket fill-capacity is assumr_-d to
be 1000. Therefore, in a 50 minute working hour, a 245 backhoe with a 2.5 yd3
bucket can move 214 yd3 of material. At this rate, the job would be completed in
965 hours.
A Caterpillar 245 backhoe rents for $18,400.00 per month, with an operating cost
of $40.65 per hour. With a 10% location adjustment factor, the rental rate would
be •$20,240.00. Using 22 days per month, 8 hours per day, the hourly rental rate
would be $1I5.00 + $40.65 = $155.65.
In addition to the backhoe which will be used to excavate material, a D9U dozer
will be required to grade the excavated material. The Division determined from
the production nomograph on page 41 of the Caterpillar Handbook, that a D9U with
a blade capacity of 18.98 yd3 has an average production speed of 1.4 mph. The
area to be graded is 46 feet in length. Therefore, a total of 2,914,560 ft2 must
be graded. Assuming 50% overlap on each pass and a 15. 75 foot size blade,
24,271 ft2 can be graded each 50 minute work hour. Therefore, it would take 120
hours to grade the backfilled area.
The total cost for downgrading the roads would be:
1 - 245 backhoe: 965 hours @ $155.65/hr. _ $150,202.00
1 - D9U dozer: 120 hours @ $127.001hr. - $ 15,240.00
2 - Operators: . 1,085 hours @ $ 15.00/hr. _ $ 16,275.00
TOTAL COST: $181,717.00
19 L4
