P. 01
SIERRA
CLUB
to _
tin ,c
Mt. Sopris Group of the Sierra Club
RO Box 4648 • Aspen, CO 81612
March 9, 1994
Mr. Mike Long,Director ' ct
Division of Mineral& Geology ,
1313 Sherman St., Rm 215 -
Denver, CO 80203
Subject: Coal Basin-Mid-continent Resources Liquidation Plan
Dear Mr. Long,
As Chairperson for the Mount Sopris Group of the Sierra Club, representing more than
400 members in the Roaring Fork and Crystal River valleys from Aspen to Glenwood
Springs, I am asking that you urge the Mined Land Reclamation Board to accept the Mid-
Continent Resources liquidation proposal whereby 5,000-6,000 acres of their Coal Basin
'holdings would be acquired by the Forest Service in a land exchange, on condition that all
appropriate provisions to guarantee completion of an acceptable reclamation program
remain in effect. As an environmental group, we are deeply concerned about any action
by either the MLRB or Mid-Continent Resources which would result in the property being
sold off in 35-acre homesites, thereby closing it to public access.
Private development of this beautiful ridge and mountain valley area, virtually surrounded
by National Forest land, would be a tragic loss to the public. The Supervisor of the White
River National Forest is strongly in favor of obtaining this property through the proposed
land exchange, and has indicated that the exchange also has the support of Pitkin County
officials.
