STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY PON74,

Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver,Colorado 80203
Phone:(303)866-3567
FAX:(303)832-8106 CONFIDENTIAL
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
DATE: July 18, 1995 RESOURCES
TO: Steve Renner Roy Romer
FROM: Dan Mathews `t i Governor
RE: Coal Basin Reclamation Bids James S.Lochhead
Executive Director
As requested in your memo of July 14 , 1995, I have reviewed M-thB Long
seed application rates contained in the bid packages for the CoalDrector
Basin refuse piles, Mine 3 and Mine 4. I have also reviewed the
critique of the revegetation specifications prepared by Savage and
Savage, including both the seeding rate concerns and the concerns
with the heavy application of native grass hay mulch.
The proposed seeding rates do appear to be excessive, based on
standard NRCS critical area seeding rate recommendations for
Colorado.
For the Sutey Refuse area seed mixture, I would recommend that the
seeding rates for small seeded species (denoted by asterisk) be
reduced by a factor of 7, and the rate for large seeded species be
reduced by a factor of 2 . This would result in a seeding rate of
approximately 5.95 PLS pounds per acre for drill seeding, and
approximately 61 seeds per square foot. Broadcast rate should be
doubled.
Sutey Pile Seedmix Recommendation
Species Drill Rate Broadcast Rate
PLS lb/ac PLS lb/ac
*Timothy .04 .08
Orchardgrass 1.25 2.50
Western wheatgrass 1 .0 2 .0
Slender wheatgrass 1.0 2 .0
Mountain brome 1. 25 2.50
*Kentucky bluegrass . 29 .58
*Tufted hairgrass .14 .28
White clover . 25 .50
Cicer milkvetch . 35 .70
Rky Mt penstemon . 125 . 25
*Western Yarrow . 125 . 25
Lewis flax . 125 . 25
Totals 5. 95 11 .90
