As requested in your memo of July 14 , 1995, I have reviewed M-th�B Long
seed application rates contained in the bid packages for the CoalDrector
Basin refuse piles, Mine 3 and Mine 4. I have also reviewed the
critique of the revegetation specifications prepared by Savage and
Savage, including both the seeding rate concerns and the concerns
with the heavy application of native grass hay mulch.
The proposed seeding rates do appear to be excessive, based on
standard NRCS critical area seeding rate recommendations for
Colorado.
For the Sutey Refuse area seed mixture, I would recommend that the
seeding rates for small seeded species (denoted by asterisk) be
reduced by a factor of 7, and the rate for large seeded species be
reduced by a factor of 2 . This would result in a seeding rate of
approximately 5.95 PLS pounds per acre for drill seeding, and
approximately 61 seeds per square foot. Broadcast rate should be
doubled.
