FIELD ACTIVITIES AT THE COAL BASIN MINE, 1995
CONFIDENTIAL
This report discusses the field activities undertaken by the
Division of Minerals and Geology at Coal Basin during 1995. The
report discusses activities and observations related to spring run
off, site maintenance, progress of reclamation construction during
1995 and field work accomplished in support of future reclamation
bids. The rationale for field directed changes to this years work
are included. A discussion of areas of concern and recommendations
for future work is included at the end of the report.
SUMMARY
What had been anticipated as routine spring maintenance of the road
drainage system developed into a , major effort to maintain the
integrity of the Dutch Creek Flume, which was in danger of
overtopping due to obstructions created by rock deposition within
the flume. The spring maintenance project also evolved into a
project to remove snow from two haul roads in order to access the
mine entries in time to hold pre-bid meetings. If the pre-bid
meetings were held later in the spring, it is possible that the
projects may not have been completed this year.
Site measurements were made for reclamation of Mines 1 and 2 , and
a contract was awarded in October. This project will begin in mid-
June, 1996.
Backfilling, grading, drainage control and revegetation efforts
were completed at Mines 3 and 4 during 1995. Reclamation of the
Sutey and Old Refuse Piles was also completed this year.
Approximately 49 acres were revegetated in 1995.
Four revegetation test plots and one erosion control experiment
were initiated on the outslope of Mine 4.
Site maintenance was accomplished during the early fall of this
year. Road ditches were cleared of debris where necessary, and
culvert entries were cleared of accumulated sediment. The nine
feet diameter steel culvert was removed from the Dutch Creek Flume,
and the eroded portions of the concrete base of the flume were
repaired.
Field work necessary to produce bid documents for reclamation of
the roads leading to the 3 , 4, and 5 Mines was accomplished. Field
2
