I think that in the long run the <br /> overall reclamation of the site would be better served by <br /> evaluating the results of the test plots and to accomplish more <br /> research into revegetation of these types of high altitude slopes <br /> before proceeding further with revegetation of the slopes. I would <br /> suggest that a revegetation bid be let in either mid to late summer <br /> 1996 or in early 1997 which would encompass the mine bench <br /> outslopes. <br /> Rock Tunnel Drainage <br /> The Rock Tunnel was observed to drain up to about 2 cubic feet per <br /> second at its peak in early summer. Although the Rock Tunnel is <br /> designed to drain from the north entry, it was observed to drain <br /> from both entries, presumably due to a rock fall within the tunnel . <br /> Construction of a permanent channel, and backfilling of the entries <br /> should take into account the possible need to reenter the tunnel in <br /> order to maintain adequate, unobstructed drainage. <br /> Possibly the use of large diameter concrete sewer pipe through the <br /> backfill into both entries would provide adequate access and <br /> drainage. Shoring of each entry to the block walls may also need <br /> to be considered. <br /> Dutch Creek Diversion <br /> The Office of Surface Mining designed a permanent diversion for <br /> Dutch Creek, which may solve the problems potentially faced by the <br /> property owners should the flume remain in place after reclamation <br /> is completed. The OSM has stated that this design could be <br /> finalized without much additional work. <br /> The design appears to be realistic and practical in nature. <br /> Resources should be approached about the implementation of the <br /> project, as well as the funding for such a project, as it exceeds <br /> the scope of the reclamation plan. <br /> Old Refuse Pile, West <br /> Consideration should be given to removing the far western portion <br /> of the Old Refuse Pile to the west central portion of the pile. <br /> The area of the pile which should be removed is that portion of the <br /> pile immediately above the slope failure adjacent to Dutch Creek <br /> near the Warehouse area. The base of the slope failure adjacent to <br /> Dutch Creek appears to be relatively stable. However, the top of <br /> the failure is dramatically oversteepened, and is sure to fail as <br /> time goes on. Eventually the slope adjustment will encroach upon <br /> the Old Refuse Pile, causing slumpage of the western portion of the <br /> pile into Dutch Creek. <br /> The concept of relocating a portion of the refuse to another area <br /> 18 <br />
